The Marker Committee by Lydia Kennaway

The Marker Committee

£80.00

Description

By Lydia Kennaway

The Marker Committee is a collection of poems exploring the ephemerality of the written word and our compulsion to leave our mark.

Inspired by the American committee of the same name, which sought to create signs for places no longer fit for human habitation, the poems consider what happens when communication falters, fragments, or fails.

Every poem is inspired by different ways of thinking abut printing, from letterpress to dot matrix to linocut. Edition of 100 printed and bound at Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print.

Doves Broadside by Lydia Kennaway

Doves Broadside

£50.00

Description

Poem by Lydia Kennaway

The Marker Committee is a collection of poems exploring the ephemerality of the written word and our compulsion to leave our mark.

At the centre of the book is a poem recounting the remarkable story of the Doves Press. Its founders, Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker, set out to create the most beautiful books known to man, but their partnership ended in conflict. Rather than allow the type to pass to Walker after his death, Cobden-Sanderson secretly cast it into the River Thames from Hammersmith Bridge. The final letters of this poem have been printed using original Doves type mudlarker from one of the largest surviving collections: type that lay beneath the murky waters of the Thames for over a century before being recovered.

Edition of 45 broadsides printed at Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print on RWS Handmade Imperial paper.

Two Poems on Coney Street by Jessie Summerhayes

Two Poems on Coney Street

£20.00

Description

By Jessie Summerhayes

Poet Jessie Summerhayes wrote these thought-provoking, playful poems in celebration of Coney Street, York's ancient high street. 'How Many Coats?' captures the ripples of the street's long history, while 'NAME OF OTHER POEM' asks what the past might look like if instead of meaning 'King's', the word 'Coney' was taken from coney, an old word for rabbit?

This book isn't just about Coney Street, it was also printed there. The Thin Ice Press team collaborated with Jessie to print this limited edition chapbook on our 1845 Columbian press in a temporary venue before we moved to our new premises.

Two Poems on Coney Street is set in Centaur type, and was printed in June 2022 on Coney Street, York on an 1845 Columbian press.

An edition of 75 copies, priced at £20. Available now.
