Join us for a fun, extended workshop, combining creative writing with printing and bookbinding.

Friday 11th September

During this three-hour workshop, we'll explore traditional Japanese binding techniques. We’ll provide an introduction to the tools of bookbinding, cover grain direction, and practise different types of visible stitching. You'll leave the workshop with your own unique, hand-bound book using washi-style paper and knowledge of the versatility of Japanese bookbinding.

The workshop will be taught by Master Printer, Nick Gill of Effra Press.

No previous experience is necessary and all equipment and materials will be provided. Please arrive five minutes before the scheduled start time.

This course will be taught over six consecutive Monday evenings at 18:00 to 20:30 from Monday 26 October to Monday 30 November 2026.


If you’re looking for an in-depth introduction to letterpress printing, this course is for you. Each week, you’ll work through exercises designed to give you a thorough grounding in fundamental printing skills, a working knowledge of different presses, and an understanding of their strengths and limitations. This course will give you the necessary skills to initiate your own projects, and the confidence to troubleshoot problems when they arise.

The course is suitable for beginners and those with some experience who are looking to take their skills to the next level. It will leave you well equipped to pursue your own projects independently

Explore the impressively large collection of wood type at Thin Ice Press and gain a hands-on introduction to letterpress printing. You can create a poster for your band, your dream line-up, cult film, horror movie, or anything else that you feel deserves top billing this Halloween. Experiment with split-fountain inking to create a vibrant colour blend, then overprint your design.

You’ll leave with a striking, one-of-a-kind poster and an introduction to the techniques and possibilities of working with wood type. The workshop is led by Mike from North or Nowt, who specialises in gigposter and fine art prints.
