On this immersive course, you’ll get hands-on experience with five different printmaking and book arts techniques. You’ll learn the basics of linocut printing, Risograph, drypoint, and letterpress, alongside bookbinding skills to create a unique portfolio showcasing your work.
The course is taught at Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print, an exceptionally well-equipped printing and printmaking studio in the heart of York, across five consecutive Wednesday evenings at 18:00 to 20:00 from Wednesday 12 November to Wednesday 10 December 2025.

Bring your phone or camera and join us for a one-of-a-kind event which pays homage to the days of silent film, and celebrates the unique beauty of traditional letterpress printing.
In this workshop, developed for the Aesthetica Short Film Festival Fringe, participants will work with our expert team to design and print a series of intertitles – also known as title cards.
We will play with fragments of speech, action and plot to create a set of unique posters celebrating the art of silent film. At the same time, participants will be invited to enjoy the beauty of our well-appointed printing studio and given the opportunity to film and photograph all aspects of the letterpress printing process.
This is a wonderful opportunity to explore the endangered craft of letterpress printing and to embrace the aesthetics of ink and type.

You will have the opportunity to proof and print your letterhead on a range of premium papers. Every participant will go away with 10 sheets of beautiful headed paper and matching envelopes. You will be offered the opportunity to order additional copies for a small fee or explore our membership options to print more copies yourself.
