Course Description

Built, repaired and repurposed - York’s Medieval city walls were linked to defence, power, trade, and civic pride. Using archaeological and documentary evidence, we will explore the functions and uses of York’s iconic walls, as well as their role in shaping how the city would have been experienced. This session focuses primarily on the medieval period, when the walls were at their largest, most important, and most flexible in function. This session intends to include a guided accessible walking tour of key survivals and hidden gems linked to the walls, along with some often overlooked features.
