Course Description

After the Norman Conquest of England, there was a remarkable monastic revival throughout the country, especially in Yorkshire. Between the 11th and the 16th centuries, monasteries became an integral part of the social, economic, and cultural landscape. This course will explore the history of Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries in Yorkshire, from their foundation all through their age of splendour. The course will study both the magnificent buildings and the lives of medieval monks, nuns, and their donors. Weather permitting, we will finish with a visit to the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey.
