Course Description

From Odysseus’s famous journey back home, to Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner’, and through to Dracula sinisterly washing up on Whitby’s shores, the sea has fascinated writers and readers alike. This course provides a survey of literature’s fascination with the sea: we will close read texts and excerpts from longer works such as Moby Dick, to understand how humans have thought about and interacted with sea through literary metaphors, and how writers have used the sea to reflect on some of humanity’s most pervasive fears, as well as hopes.
