Whether you’re seeking a journey through time, a peaceful escape into nature, or a unique shopping experience, Durham is a captivating "City of the Prince-Bishops." Crowned by its world-famous UNESCO World Heritage skyline, this compact and hilly city is a masterpiece of Norman architecture and northern charm.

Discover a city of historic wonder -

  • A Cathedral of Legends: Step inside Durham Cathedral, arguably the finest Norman building in Europe. Fans of the Wizarding World will instantly recognize its cloisters and Chapter House as the filming locations for Hogwarts, while history buffs can pay their respects at the shrines of St Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede.

  • The Prince-Bishops' Stronghold: Explore Durham Castle, a 1,000-year-old fortress that once protected the English border. Today, it serves as a unique college for Durham University—take a guided tour to walk the Great Hall and see where centuries of political and religious power were held.

  • Riverside Tranquillity: Take the scenic Riverside Walk that loops around the wooded peninsula. With the River Wear reflecting the illuminated Cathedral above, it's the perfect spot for photography, a quiet morning coffee, or spotting local wildlife like herons and otters.

  • Victorian Markets & Hidden Gems: Wander through the Durham Market Hall, a bustling indoor Victorian market filled with local crafts and fresh produce. Afterward, explore the independent boutiques tucked away on Elvet Bridge and Saddler Street for one-of-a-kind gifts.

  • Botanical Bliss: Visit the Durham University Botanic Garden on the edge of the city to discover 10 hectares of exotic plants, quiet woodland trails, and themed gardens from across the globe.
