Course Description

In 1399 Henry Bolingbroke usurped the throne from his cousin Richard II and spent the next ten years defending himself against plots, rebellions and assassination attempts. Although his father, John of Gaunt, had supported Lollardy, Henry IV needed the support of the established church and his 1401 act ‘De heretico comburendo’ equated heresy with treason for the very first time and condemned heretics to be burnt at the stake. This day school examines the reasons why Bolingbroke took the throne, his struggles to keep it, and his legacy.
