Course Description

Focusing on the period c1540- 1590, this course will consider Venetian painting, particularly the work of later Titian and of Tintoretto, and Veronese, though considering other artists where relevant. We will consider these artists' mutual rivalry, interactions and influence, and their place in the broader context of later Italian Renaissance art. Issues of patronage, materials, technique, location and subject-matter will be repeatedly raised, and we will consider how these factors influence and inform specific art-works and their meanings.
