The Textures of Medieval Embroidery

A non-accredited History of Art course.

Course Code

CLL 22/23_NA_185
Course Description

In this course, we will explore the techniques found within early medieval embroidery through the stitches they used to create texture and definition. We will begin with an overview of medieval elite embroideries to identify style, technique and colour palette, and then using this information, you will have the opportunity to create a small panel of embroidery, experimenting with defining areas of a design through texture alone at home. In the second session, we will engage in group discussions of the process of making your own panels, and reflect on the medieval examples seen in the first week. All materials for the task to be undertaken at home will be provided and are included within the course fee.
