Course Description

The city-states known as maritime republics were independent territories which enjoyed considerable power in the Mediterranean. From the tenth to the thirteenth centuries, these republics created fleets both for their own protection and to support their extensive network of trade. They provided transport to individuals and states, but mostly they would take advantage of political and trading opportunities wherever these appeared. This course will study the rise and decline of Amalfi, Pisa, Venice, and Genoa, as great naval medieval powers.
