The Literary Landscapes of Sir Walter Scott

A non-accredited Literature course.

Course Code

CLL 22/23_NA_198
Course Description

Beginning with Allan Massie’s The Ragged Lion, this course will explore the world of Sir Walter Scott’s Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border, those ballads which became part of his own creative landscape. We shall consider the complex and multi-faceted historical and cultural contexts of three novels - Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and Redgauntlet - in which plot and theme challenge and inform our understanding of identity and belonging. Ballads from the Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border will be provided.
