Poet Laureate during much of Queen Victoria’s reign, Lord Alfred Tennyson was a versatile poet, who wrote about topics as varied as sea creatures and grief. This course will explore the contexts of his life, and works, through weekly classes. The course will join together historical background with literary analysis through close-readings of Tennyson’s texts. We will ask what Tennyson’s work can tell us about the Victorian period, and its relationship to grief, science, art, and individuality.
