On 25 July 306 AD Constantine the Great was proclaimed Roman Emperor in York. Memories of this event became entangled with the belief that Constantine was born in York, (at the Bedern), and that Constantine’s mother, Helena, was a British princess. This day school examines the historical life of Helena, (who reputedly discovered the True Cross on which Jesus died), the development of the British legends of St Helena, and why so many churches were dedicated to St Helena.
