Much of art history is focused around the idea of the original artwork. Yet so often we are familiar with and recognise famed artworks through the creation of copies, whether made as paintings, photography, drawings, prints, textiles or sculpture. We’ll take key case studies from across the centuries to explore different relationships with copies, and why they’re crucial for our understanding of visual culture and the art historical canon.
