The Consolations of Poetry: How Words Can Soothe our Stressed Minds

A non-accredited Literature course.

Course Code

CLL 22/23_NA_196
Course Description

In this course, participants will discuss the premise that reading poetry can be a healing process which helps us cope with life’s adversities while engendering a sense of comfort and consolation. This may prove especially relevant in these politically challenged times. We will read poems around six main themes: stopping, reflecting, stress management, releasing, feeling alone and living with uncertainty.

‘If we can allow the healing power of stillness and the transformative (..) poetry to work together, we may come to notice subtle changes in heart and mind.’ Mark Williams, Professor of Psychology, Oxford University.
