Course Description

The twelfth century witnessed the foundation of more monastic orders than ever before. By far the most successful among them were the Cistercians, who established themselves in England, especially in Yorkshire, early in that century. Until the sixteenth century, Cistercian monasteries became an integral part of the English social, economic, and cultural landscape. This day course will explore the history of Cistercian Order and their monasteries, especially those in Yorkshire, from their foundation to the Dissolution.
