Course Description

At times of turmoil, the apocalyptic imagination becomes pronounced. Recent times have seen a renewed interest in the idea of an apocalypse caused, for example, by climate catastrophe, war, pandemic, or the ubiquitous zombies. This course will address the development of the apocalyptic imagination in images, from early illuminated manuscripts of the Book of Revelation to twenty-first century cinema, and identify how our understanding of history and our place in the world has been profoundly shaped by apocalyptic imagery.
