Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) was one of the leading painters of the Florentine Renaissance, whose The Birth of Venus and Primavera are among the most recognisable of artworks today, but remarkably, fell into oblivion immediately after his death. In this course, we shall examine what made Botticelli a favourite of Lorenzo de’ Medici (the Magnificent), possible causes for the subsequent oblivion, and ponder the mystic quality of Botticelli’s elegant production, situating it in the cultural context of the day.
