This course will analyse the contemporary trend to explore the Homeric epics from the point of view of the women caught up in the classic tales. We’ll explore Circe by Madeline Miller, The Silence of the Girls and The Women of Troy by Pat Barker, and A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes. We will consider whether these new imaginings are feminist in intent, whether it is fitting or appropriate to reframe these imaginings through 21st century eyes, and what light these fresh tellings shed on the lives of women today. We will also askhow these texts impact our attitudes towards the male heroes of these epics – do their reputations survive intact?
