Raphael and his Circle

Course Information

Raphael and his Circle

A non-accredited history of art course

Course Code

CLL 23/24_NA_140
Course Description

Unlike his rival Michelangelo, Raphael was not just a superb draughtsman and designer, but also an exceptional organiser, delegator, and social networker. As a consequence, he was able through his large and highly efficient workshop to produce an extraordinary number of high-quality artworks and schemes of decoration, and, despite his short life, rose to become, alongside Michelangelo, the other dominant Cental Italian artist of his age. This course will focus on the paintings of Raphael and his network of friendships, rivalries and associates, in order to examine his crucial role in developing and contesting a 'high' Renaissance style.
