Course Description

Lauded by some as a liberal pioneer, but reviled in Ireland as the ‘Devil from over the Sea’ for his war crimes in Drogheda and Wexford, Oliver Cromwell has remained a controversial figure. His zeal for a ‘godly reformation’ ultimately led him to push for the execution of Charles I and set up a Republic, but his rule as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth was seen by many as tyranny. Was Oliver Cromwell a man driven by conscience and vision, a superb politician and a great military leader, or was he a ruthless military dictator and a ‘brave bad man’?
