Course Description

There has been a huge rise in personal and professional diagnoses of mental health problems and mental disorders. Historically, rates of mental disorder and mental health problems increased significantly due to two social processes: the nineteenth century medicalisation of madness; and the twentieth century cultural sanctification of the ‘self’. The COVID-19 pandemic has further augmented levels of psychological suffering. But is there a genuine crisis in mental health or an increase in ‘mental healthism’ (that is, pathologising everyday problems with living)?
