Course Description

Constantine the Great commissioned the construction of the first Christian monumental churches, using secular Roman buildings as models. Since then, religious (Christian) architecture has developed, from highly decorated Byzantine churches through Romanesque monumental ones to the glories of Gothic. By studying detailed images of surviving medieval churches, this one-day course will explore the historical events and the technical innovations that allowed religious architecture to develop throughout Europe in the Middle Ages.
