Course Description

By studying documents, architecture and art, this course will examine the history of monasticism from the early Middle Ages to the Reformation. Focusing on key male and female monastic figures, it will cover from the creation of the Benedictine Order through the foundations of the Augustinians and Cistercians to the arrival of Franciscans and Dominicans. Significant attention will also be given to the buildings and landscapes constructed by the monastic population and the books they produced in their scriptoria.
