Course Description

About 121 AD, Suetonius wrote his Lives of the Caesars, a book of biographies of Julius Caesar and the first eleven Roman emperors. The book has been described as sensationalist, relying on gossip and hearsay. In the twenty-first century, Mary Beard has revisited the Lives of the Caesars, offering her analyses and interpretations. This course will be based on both Suetonius and Mary Beard’s books. It will explore the historical Caesars’ lives and what Roman people said (sometimes whispered) about them.
