For most, the image of the workhouse is one of Dickensian poverty and hardship. Using a range of literary and documentary sources, this day-long course will examine the rise of the workhouse to its Victorian heyday. Looking at poor relief and attitudes toward the problem of poverty, this course will explore the experiences of the inmates and consider the eventual decline of the institution. Just how grim was life in the workhouse really?
