Kindness: a Sociological Approach to Understanding Why People and Communities are Compassionate

A non-accredited social sciences course

Course Code

CLL 24/25_NA_060
Course Description

Callousness, cruelty, and killings are frequent topics of news broadcasts, modes of entertainment, and commentary in social media. But most people and their communities, most of the time, are kind. This Saturday course examines kindness from sociological perspectives as well as ideas and empirical evidence from, for example, psychology, social psychology, anthropology, zoology, and biology. These specific questions will be addressed: What is kindness? Why are people and communities kind? Are animals kind? Why does kindness not get more attention?
