Katherine Howard: 'Juvenile Delinquent' or Victim?

A non-accredited history and heritage course

Course Code

Course Description

On Monday 13 February 1542 Henry VIII’s fifth wife, Katherine Howard, was executed for failing to disclose her sexual history to the king within 20 days of their marriage. She suffered the same fate as her first cousin Anne Boleyn who was executed in 1536. Yet whilst historians dismiss the charges of adultery against Anne as fabrications, Katherine has been portrayed as a foolish ‘juvenile delinquent’ and sexually promiscuous. Was Katherine Howard really a ‘frivolous, empty-headed girl’, or was she a political pawn of her Howard family and the victim of the Tudor Court?
