Course Description

Described by Froissart as ‘the most beautiful woman in all the realm of England’, Joan of Kent was the mother of Richard II and the wife of the Black Prince, eldest son of Edward III. However, she was also Countess of Kent in her own right, a religious reformer and a respected political power in the turbulent court of Richard II. This day school examines why Joan was imprisoned twice in her youth, her three scandalous marriages, (two clandestine and one bigamous), and her later political career.
