This course introduces basic issues in metaphysics, the philosophical study of the nature of reality. Topics include questions about existence, the distinction between particulars and universals, realism versus idealism, free will, causation, and the nature of time. No previous knowledge of philosophy or metaphysics is required. The course involves reading and discussing excerpts from both classic texts in the history of western philosophy (Plato, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Leibniz) and contemporary authors (Quine, Armstrong, Peter van Inwagen, J.J.C.
