Course Description

Home to eleven fishing villages and without a name of its own, in 1842 Hong Kong island became a British colony and part of the British Empire. A small colony at first, and usually looked down upon by other imperial possessions, Hong Kong grew territorially by stages of further colonial expansion to include some mainland and 235 more islands. This course looks at the history of a turbulent and dangerous territory, and its survival as one of the last outposts of Empire.
