History Through Chinese Export Art

A non-accredited History and Heritage course.

Course Code

CLL 22/23_NA_166
Course Description

Aside from the more-celebrated Ming vases and Terracotta Army, a little-known field of Chinese art is ‘export art’, produced by Chinese artists to provide visual mementos of China before the invention of cameras. Subject matter included places, personalities, ordinary folk, commerce, and portraits of Westerners themselves. This course will study early Anglo-Chinese relations through these atmospheric artworks, from early contacts to the nineteenth Century, and consider the mysterious disappearance of the most famous collection of export art, the Chater Collection.
