Course Description

From the collapse of the Carolingian Empire to the triumph over the English at the end of the Hundred Years’ War, France would mutate from a small kingdom comprising Paris and its environs to a powerful and confident country which had annexed almost all the lands of modern France. This course will study this development, exploring the ways in which the Franks became the French. It will focus on the social, cultural, political and economic changes that made this transformation possible.
