Course Code

Course Description

‘Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.’ – Plato.

This one-day course will introduce students to the main themes in medieval musical praxis. We will consider how philosophers, including Augustine and Boethius, conceptualised music as a reflection of the harmonies of the cosmos and what it means for humans to create, perform, and experience music in the medieval world.
