Course Description

Young Emma of Normandy was Ӕthelred the Unready’s queen. Leaving their sons in Normandy, she returned to England to become Cnut the Great’s queen. Their son Harthacnut would briefly become King of England, followed by her elder son, Edward, in 1042. Queen-Mother Emma became one of the wealthiest and most influential women in England, but her life was far from easy or comfortable. This one-day course will explore the life of this remarkable woman, focusing on contemporary documents and art.
