Course Description

Corsets have attracted comments, criticism and complaints since their invention, while serving a whole host of functions for their wearers.

This course explores the history of corsetry in Europe from the origins of upper-body shapewear to the mass-produced corsets of the industrial age. Through a variety of sources, we will tackle myths and misinformation to explore why corsets were really worn, what they meant to their wearers, and how this vital and often mischaracterised piece of clothing developed over time.
