Between the Sheets: Literary Liaisons of 20th century Women Writers

A non-accredited literature course

Course Code

Course Description

Women writers have often formed liaisons with men who were themselves well-known writers. But many of these relationships can be seen as unequal in terms of love, money, power and influence. This course will examine four such relationships – those between Katherine Mansfield and John Middleton Murray, Jean Rhys and Ford Maddox Ford, Anaïs Nin and Henry Miller, and Martha Gellhorn and Ernest Hemingway. By focusing on these partnerships, we will establish to what extent the experiences of the writers involved had an influence on the work they produced.
