The island of Sicily has a multifaceted history and a multi-layered culture. In this short course the focus will be on the city of Palermo, one of the great metropolitan centres of the Mediterranean, and on the periods in which the Arabs and Normans dominated from there. We will analyse how the city changed, and to some extent improved, under the Arabs and how the Normans adapted the remains of Arab buildings to erect their palaces and churches.
