In this course we will explore the world of Icelandic literature, beginning in the thirteenth century with Old Norse-Icelandic sagas and continuing throughout the history of Icelandic literature to the present day with Reykjavík’s exciting contemporary poetry scene. Throughout this course, we will learn about the history of Icelandic literature, the historical events surrounding it, and Icelandic culture. From monsters and the walking dead to opera-singing fishermen and the all-elusive elves, come and explore the mysterious world of Iceland’s greatest works of literature. We will be reading all texts in English translation and no previous experience of Icelandic language is necessary for this course.
