Course Description

Alice de Lacy was Countess of Lincoln and Salisbury in her own right, but after her marriage, aged 13, her estates were managed by her husband, Thomas, Earl of Lancaster. His rebellion against Edward II is well-known, but the life of Alice de Lacy illustrates the fate of many landed heiresses in the medieval period. Abducted twice, and married three times, she was eventually forced to give up nearly all her lands to the favourites of Edward II and Edward III.
