Course Description

Alcuin was Master at York Minster Cathedral School when Charlemagne invited him to lead a revolutionary programme at his court; Alcuin played a main role in the revival of studies known as Carolingian Renaissance. Aprolific writer, Alcuin produced theological and dogmatic treatises, grammar works, and poems. Charlemagne’s biographer called him, ‘the most learned man anywhere to be found’. This course will explore the life of Alcuin, paying particular attention to his achievements as a major architect of the Carolingian Renaissance.
