Course Description

Aethelflaed, eldest daughter of Alfred the Great, was a key player in the tenth century conquest of the Danelaw, and was described in Irish and Welsh Annals as a ‘renowned Saxon queen’. After the death of her husband, Athelflaed ruled Mercia as queen in her own right, and by 918 had gained the respect of the Vikings of Jorvik. This day school will examine the life and career of this warrior queen whose medieval reputation outstripped that of her brother Edward the Elder.
