Course Description

From medieval mystics to the lunatic asylum, from Victorian ideas of hysteria to victims of shellshock, the understanding of mental illness has a long and changing history in the UK. This day-long course will offer an overview of how mental illness was understood, treated and represented in British culture, from early origins to the post-war period and consider the legacy of these interpretations today.
