A statue of the Ancient Mariner stands in Watchet Harbour in Somerset, bearing witness to Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s enduring popularity. From his famous ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner’, to lesser-known poems, this course explores the work and influence of Coleridge. Alongside close readings of his poems, we will consider excerpts from Coleridge’s Biographia Literaria, as we think about how his work has influenced later poets, including TS Eliot, shaping how we think about the theory and practice of poetry.
