‘Science, Gender and Sociability in a Northern City c. 1775-1820’ - Conference, June 8-10 2023. DescriptionAbout: This interdisciplinary event brings together scholars in women’s history, the history of science, literature, theatrical performance, music and historical archaeology from across the UK and the US, to contextualise and analyse the diary of Jane Ewbank (1778‒1824). Jane Ewbank, the twenty-five year old daughter of a York druggist, kept a 34,000-word diary between 1803-1805, which details a conscious project of self-education via reading, sociability and her involvement in the intellectual and social landscape of a northern English city, including the theatre, concerts, science lectures, the natural world and its materiality. All participants will have online access to the diary.

Catering: All tickets (apart from "online") include complimentary tea and coffee each day. We are able to offer lunch for all attendees at an additional cost of £10 per day. Lunch must be booked in advance so please ensure that you purchase lunch for each day that you require. For example, if you would like to attend the full conference, and have lunch each day, please add a Thursday ticket, Friday ticket, Saturday ticket, Thursday lunch, Friday lunch and Saturday lunch to your basket before checking out.
Conference Dinner We very much hope you will join us for the conference dinner on Friday 9 June at 7.30pm. The dinner will take place at ASK Italian, an Italian restaurant based in the magnificent Assembly Rooms, designed by Lord Burlington in 1730, where Jane Ewbank regularly attended subscription concerts. The meal must be preordered and paid for in advance. The cost is £30 for a three course meal, including drinks.
