Course Description

Medieval and modern historians could not be more different; while the former was driven by faith and loyalties, the latter aims to reach objectivity. This module will examine how the medieval historian gathered, arranged, and presented their evidence. Against the backdrop of medieval chroniclers’ assumptions and the pre-eminence of religion, the module will assess their interpretation of major events, warfare, and politics. From Bede to Robert Mannyng, the module will study a number of historical texts written between 700 and 1400.
