Course Description

The Centenary of the Great War has refocused attention on its impact on British society. Why did so many men volunteer for military service and why did conscription become necessary by 1916? How were the New Armies trained, equipped and sustained? What were the trenches and battle like for the individual soldier? How was the economy geared to meet the needs of a modern army, and to what extent did conflict transform the status of women?
