Course Description

A barren rock, a coaling station, the Paris of the East, this course will consider the contrasting origins and differing fates of three British settlements in China: Hong Kong, Wei-Hai-Wei and Shanghai. Hong Kong was initially ridiculed by Queen Victoria and her Prime Minister as worthless. Wei-Hai-Wei, a small, remote naval station, was nonetheless a crown colony. The English concession at Shanghai, originally a row of merchants' warehouses, became the world's most scandalous city.
