Course Description

Lavishly decorated and skilfully illuminated manuscripts are among the most remarkable treasures of medieval Europe. Monastic scriptoria as well as secular workshops produced a vast number of these precious - in more than one sense - books, many of which have survived to amaze the modern viewer. This course aims to study the design, production and execution of paradigmatic books executed between the eighth to the fifteenth centuries, focusing on the techniques and materials used, and the iconography depicted. This course will include a visit to the Minster Library to study real Medieval manuscripts.
