Course Description

This course will trace the origins and stylistic evolution of Sicilian residential architecture. From the Roman palatial villa of Piazza Armerina (fourth century AD) to the Art Nouveau Villino Caruso (1906), the architecture and decorative elements reveal the influences of the rich cultures and of the people who inhabited or visited them. We will also explore the beautiful houses and gardens created by some members of the English community, including the Ingham-Whitaker Marsala wine barons in Palermo and Robert Hawthorn Kitson in Taormina, who incidentally came from Yorkshire.
